This article describes how grading and assessment works in the "Handin and Assess" activity.
Depending on the configuration of the activity, the activity looks approximately as follows:
In this screen, the attempt number is displayed in the top left corner. Clicking on the 'i' opens a popup with detailed information about the activity and attempt you are reviewing. The number of submitted files is visible at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on this bar reveals more information, including who uploaded each document and when. The test date is displayed above the 'confirm assessment' button. This is generally determined automatically based on the submission date. You can read more about what this date means and who is authorized to modify it here.
For an 'assessment only' activity, the 'assess' button appears instead of 'review'. Using the 'review' or 'assess' button, you will be taken to the screen where the assessment takes place. If documents have been submitted, they are visible on the left side of the screen. You can read more information about providing feedback on submitted documents here.
All evaluation takes place on the right side of this screen. As soon as you open the screen, you will see the option to provide general feedback and, depending on the configuration, the assessment form or the option to upload your own assessment form.
A number of options are available at the top of the screen. These buttons do the following:
- Information button: This opens a popup with detailed information about the activity and attempt you are reviewing.
- Focus mode: This opens the application in full screen, eliminating distractions from other elements of your browser or operating system. This provides more space to view items on the screen and allows for greater focus in your work.
- Full screen & Close: These two buttons allow you to view the assess section in full screen or close it to focus more on the submitted document.
At the bottom of the screen, a block with status messages is visible. The status of the assessment is displayed here in three steps:
-
Assessment form: The status of the form completion or upload is displayed here. Notifications regarding mandatory/optional questions and knockout/inadmissible responses are also visible here. If the general feedback is mandatory but not yet completed, this is also displayed here.
-
Enter assessment: Here, the user sees the field to enter the assessment. If a digital assessment form is used, the number of points and the percentage achieved are also visible here. The save button saves both the assessment and other changes to the form or the general feedback.
-
Confirm assessment: As soon as all mandatory fields have been filled in, a check mark will appear here and the "Go to record assessment" button will become available. Any notifications regarding the status of a student's exam registration are also visible here.
The "Go to record assessment" button takes you back to the activity, where a summary of the assessment is displayed and the assessment can then be confirmed and published.
Assessment via general feedback
In this situation, you mainly have one important input field: the General feedback.
In this field, you can enter free text in a plain text field to provide feedback on your assessment. After making a change in this field, the "Save" button in the bottom right under 'enter assessment' becomes active, and you can click on it to save your changes.
After the assessment, the student will also see this feedback in the assessment file, directly next to the grade.
If you want to provide more detailed feedback, or substantiate your feedback with images or formatted text, we recommend creating and uploading your own assessment form.
Assessing with a digital assessment form
In this situation, the logic of the Save button changes. The button is therefore named 'Save / Recalculate' and, in addition to saving, will also calculate the number of points achieved based on the completed questions.
Furthermore, the general feedback field still exists, with the same function as in the variant above.
Below that, you will see various question groups that you can expand and collapse. Within these groups are various question types, including multiple choice, open questions, and rubrics. Each question can contain a number of points for the final result.
Some questions may be mandatory. These are indicated by an asterisk in the top left corner. As long as the question is not answered, this indicator is red. You can only complete the assessment once all of these have been answered. Under the heading 'assessment form' at the bottom, it is indicated how many mandatory questions there are. By clicking on 'go to next', you navigate directly to the first unanswered mandatory question.
Specific answers to questions can also be a knockout criterion. This means that if this answer is selected, the submitted work can no longer be assessed. The assessment is therefore inadmissible. In that case, you can immediately submit this assessment and return to the attempt to complete it.
Depending on the configuration, you can optionally upload your own assessment form. However, this will completely replace the digital version above for the student.
Configuration Options
What you can do in this assessment depends on how it was configured for you by the test developer. We have a separate page in our administrator guide that explains all the options for this activity.
